- Top 10 Things to Do
(Story Ideas)
- in Old Orchard Beach Maine
Here are a few story ideas. Please feel
free to use any of these concepts or come visit the beach and develop
your own.
1. Visit Palace Playland – New England’s last remaining
beachfront amusement park. Ride the Ferris Wheel, grab a cotton candy,
walk thru the Funhouse.
2. Walk the Pier – Old Orchard Beach’s centerpiece and
historic landmark, extends nearly 500-feet out over the open ocean.
Today the Pier is the hub of beach activity and makes for some great
people watching.
3. Have an ice cream soda the old fashioned way at the Ocean
Park Soda Fountain. Slip back to a quieter time, before lattes
and frappaccinos became the craze, at this Century old Soda Fountain. The
entire hamlet of Ocean Park, just one mile from the famous Pier is a world
away and a story unto itself.
4. Eat like a kid, with your fingers, no forks required
to eat a box of Pier Fries, a slice of Pizza, a double scoop ice cream
or even Maine’s premier crustacean – Lobster. Though you want a bib,
some cracking tools, and butter for your chin.
5. Education meets recreation – Visit the Harmon Museum and
learn about the history of Old Orchard Beach, from apple
orchards to Indian attacks, Lindburg’s inspiration to take off and land
planes on the Beach, to Big Band sounds of Duke Ellington emanating from
the historic Pier.
6. Ride the rails - just like a century ago, Old
Orchard Beach is again serviced ten times daily by train in the summer
by the Downeaster (Amtrak).
7. Take a swing at our sand traps – Old Orchard Beach
has over a dozen nearby 18-hole golf courses. Golfers will not want to
miss all this great golf. Not ready for the PGA? Old Orchard Beach is
also home to numerous mini-golf facilities for the future golf tigers to
practice their putts.
8. Commune with nature when you paddle Maine’s largest saltwater
marsh in your own canoe or kayak and discover an abundance of
wildlife in its natural habitat.
9. Get down and dirty – stage your own family sand castle
competition. Mom - sand is a natural exfoliate for your skin,
Dad - here is your chance to even out your lawnmower tan, kids - when is
the last time your parents got sandy with you?
10. Link the Lighthouses – tour our nearby coastline
including several landmark beacons, starting with Maine’s oldest
lighthouse commissioned by George Washington or the fabulous Two Lights
State Park just 20 minutes to our north.
